I am sure this will come as no surprise to most of you! I was aware that Jimnys are prone to rust in the well where the jack is kept, but did not know why until today. I was cleaning inside my 05 Jimny, and I spotted three rust blisters, where the spot welds are. A few minutes with a dremel and a sanding drum told me the story. The inside layer was through in three spots about as big as a finger nail, but the underneath layer is fine. Looking underneath I find the double layer at the point above the silencer is provided with two holes about 10mm to allow water in to the area where spot welding has removed any protection from the steel, and is a superb area for holding salty water and the heat from the silencer ensures it works its magic. Lovely bit of design Suzuki! Cleaned up inside and smoothrited at once. Then underneath with waxoil aerosol and a long pipe. Cavity blasted with waxoil, so that should slow the rot down at least! Now I am going to go all round looking for more such areas and cavities. Waxoil shares will be up no doubt.

There is a double skin under the rear seatbelt mountings, and a double skin cavity at the vertical wall under the front of the back seat.

The jimny has so many double skinned rust traps that I think Alec Issigonis might have helped design it :ohmy:

If it suddenly breaks, go back to the last thing that you did before it broke and start looking there :)

I think the reason it rusts just there is cos its right above the back box and there's no heat shield there so the constant heating & cooling causes condensation to form inside which builds up so you have water sitting there & over time causes it to rust

It certainly brought back memories of 1960's cars! Thanks for that, I will have some "fun" exploring all those dark corners. Maybe better get a lot more waxoyl... :whistle:

There's a rubber bung in a hole and I wonder if it is better to remove it so any water can just drain out. I undersealed mine which reminds me; got to get a bottle jack. :laugh: :laugh: I still think I should get a can opener and just remove that well. ;)
