I have the same issue, it is really annoying.
I have some rotational free play, when in-gear mostly in the intermediate axel between the gear box and the transwer case. Is it normal?
I did clearance on the rear diferencial, it only mitigated the problem a little.
There is no vertical or horizontal play, u joints seem to be fine, all bolts tight in radius arms.

I tend not to give a reply to these kind of questions. Partly because the vague description of the noise can be lost in translation as english is not my first language. Partly due to it can be many things, Partly cause even garages lack knowledge and understanding of an old fashoined 4x4 system.
In a set of gearwheels, depending on size of the teeth and diameter and shape of them, angles and many more variables, there should allways be clearence between the wheels. The ideal situation is for the flanks of the teeth to roll over each other with as little friction and grinding / scuffing as possible. Also when one set of teeth are in connection and rotating, it is preferable that the next set of teeth get into grip before the last one has left grip so there is a smooth rolling motion from one tooth to the next. Such an ideal situation is Sometimes not possible to achieve as other considerstions also Come into play like strenght, Oil film build up, production, gear noise and so on.
So in each and every set of gears in the gearbox, transfer and diffs there is play and there must be.
Normal play that you can see when you are under the car and can twist the shaft a few degrees between contact in each end.
So how much is normal?
I have no idea but I have no worries either.
Problems with gears will manifest in abnormal noise, and with bearings too. Play like up down or noticable play in Ujoints is easily felt if you got it.
Anyone wiser?
Probably not.

Thanks.
Is this normal you think? It is in the first gear.

First impression, much less than mine.
The rotational play alone looks all fine to me.
