Reverse lights not working was created by mickt
Does any body know where the reverse light switch is located on the 1.3 2001 Jimny with a manual box? I have a cd type manual that mentions the "back up light" in the section 8 "electrics" but only as a defect check list. There is also an electric circuit shown in another part of the disc but no mention anywhere of the switch location. In other cars/vans the switch is found on the gearbox. Before I get under the car and get dirty I just want to make sure I am looking in the right direction. If it is on the box is it adjustable? Or is it mounted on the linkage? I have checked the bulbs and they are OK. I have yet to locate and check the fuse.
Cheers for any help. MickT

Many thanks for that. When I get round to do the nearside kingpin next week I will have a look. The fuse is ok so it looks like the switch is the culprit!

I had this on mine at the end of last year and it was the switch. Easy to replace once you've found it by tracing wires to it as it's mostly out of sight. I tested the switch by putting the ignition on, putting it in reverse, connecting two wires to the switch via spade terminals and then putting a test lamp to them. It was fubard.

The dealer said he sold a fair few as the same part fits numerous Zukes but weirdly he sells loads in a month then none for a few and has another run on them.

It was just under £20 if I remember right.

I have 12 volts to the switch so it looks like the switch. Checked with Suzuki and it is just under £31 with the seal! I did a search on ebay and they showed them around half that but the picture shown was with the connector on the switch. The one fitted has fly leads which then connect to the disconnect point. So to be safe I am going with the Suziki one. When I first got the Jimny I searched ebay for the filters to do a service and upon putting in a search for fuel filter it came up as an inline service replaceable. I have since found out that the filter is in the tank and is not a replacement item as such. So I am a bit wary of ebay for some things!
As for easy to change, from what I found it is nigh on impossible to get to from underneath. You can see it but to get a hand on it to remove it would need a double jointed baby with extra long arms!I had the car up on good height ramps too. I reckon the best of two evils would be to remove the engine rather than the gearbox for access. One bonus doing that would be that the clutch wear can be inspected and refitted in comfort. On that front it appears Suzuki do not supply the clutch as a 3 piece kit, but you buy each bit seperate. That was the way it used to be back in the 70's, then the suppliers decided to do away with that and only supply the clutch as a kit!
Good thing the lights are not an MOT failure.......YET! This one is not due till October so I plan to do it if the weather ever looks like improving for a week or so.

No, No, No, No, No! You don't need to remove the engine and it isn't that hard to get to it! A small adjustable spanner will get onto it and it's not in tight. The seal is on the switch, it's not a seperate part.

What engine have you got fitted? Single or twin cam?

The only place to get the reversing light switch is a dealer. There is no aftermarket option.

If the clutch and it's biting point are fine, leave it alone. Otherwise don;t buy a genuine one, get a good aftermarket one such as LUK or QH, albeit QH have gone bust. If the clutch needs doing, then yes the switch may be easier to do at the same time but I wouldn't take the engine out, just pull the box back.

As for the fuel filter, I don't think they are meant to be changed as the whole tank needs to come out.

Where are you mate? If you're near Southend-on-Sea I'll change the switch for you.

Thanks for the offer kirkynut, but I am in Stoke. There is no rush. The MOT is due in October. The clutch bite is well up the pedal travel range and will need doing sooner than later.I want it done before the snow comes!! It is not slipping or anything but better to catch it before it does.
The dealers parts catalogue showed the seal as a seperate item and he reckoned it comes without the seal so I ordered it. £1.04 for the seal and £29.40 for the switch.
Looking at the box removal it looks far more involved with all the prop shafts to remove etc. where the engine is relatively straight forward.Apart from the gearbox /engine flange bolts most of the work can be done standing up. I have a engine crane so I reckon that is the way for me.
Cheers for your help, mickt
