Update, Last night engine started cutting out again and long enough to get a fault code. P 105 MAP/BARO CIRCUT MALFUNCTION. I take it this is map sensor on the inlet manifold. or could be throttle position sensor

Apologies if you have done this already but have you gone back to basics and checked compression/valve settings also the plugs??
Leaving aside electronics and sensors if this was an older car I would suspect valves/compression/plugs/timing etc.
As you say you are only getting the symptoms at speed or when the engine is hot.
The red hot exhaust sounds like weak mixture and/or timing??
My train of thought is that as the timing changes and the engine gets hotter a valve may be being kept open due to expansion /close tolerances allowing the compression and hot gases to escape down the exhaust. The sensors are trying to compensate but come up with a weak mixture??:)

I started off high and worked my way down ever since :-)

Cheers Bud.
Had new plugs but haven't checked compression/valve settings yet it is a question of where do you start and when do you give up considering the vehicle age. Got me beet.

Well it doesn't cost anything to check valve clearances and if you can get hold of a compression tester once the valves are checked a worn valve will show up.
Has your fuel consumption suffered??
