I'm not sure using WD40 is the best lubricant / penetration oil for the brake mechanisms.
I prefer to use proper penetration oil to free up parts such as bleed nipples and Copper grease where I want parts to stay free. I find that WD40 dries out and is best kept for electrics and mild lubrication and is also quite good for cleaning bits.

You were all correct - build of mud/clay prevented the brakes from working...
Having gone off roading last weekend I managed to blow one of the front pads out with the pressure washer!! So once I got home started to strip down the front caliper only to find that the pads have completely worn out  , no shops open of course on a Sunday evening! So had to re-build with the old pads. Then moved on to the rear brakes to try and clean them up as advised. Failed!! Couldn't get the drum off! Had my camera ready and everything....
I dropped the car off first thing monday morning at a local garage who replaced the front pads and then emptied both rear drums which were packed solid with rock hard clay and mud! They had to use some pneumatic tool to release the drum!! I will now hopefully be able to remove the drum myself and clean them more regularly.
Thank you for the advice, I promise to clean the brakes after each off roading session.....

Did you try to "drive" the drum off with a pair of bolts? IIRC they're something like m8, you drive a bolt into the hole with your ratchet and it will pop the drum off. Using a pair of bolts and tightening a bit at a time will pull it off even.
As you say, just pull them off and clean them out after any mud session.

best thing we did was fit rear disks - handbrake holds on steep hills even after a few hours offroading

On the 8th Day God made the LandRover -
On the 9th day he swapped it for a Jimny.
