You need a battery tender as the Americans call them, the battery is discharging due to the alarm etc.

Optimate is one of the best around.

You could use a solar charger, but they don't work very well

If it suddenly breaks, go back to the last thing that you did before it broke and start looking there :)

also consider Exide Maxxima Dual AGM. As good as Optima but slightly cheaper.

I guess you were both lucky and unlcky Kirkynut! Lucky the battery didn't leak, but unlucky to find out the way you did!

They were originally designed for Marine work where they are tipped all over the shop, so they have been made not to leak. So there is no reason for them to do so really.

Don't think of them like the battery you'd get in Halfords!
