DC to DC charger and standard alternator in a 2016 gen3
Hi all. some help please Im currently researching (learning as I go) and putting together a solar set up for my 2016 Jimny. What started as a simple build has become rather more uprated with the wifes demand for a 1800 watt hairdryer capacity ! I now have a 20 amp DC to DC charger and a 100 watt solar panel, to 2 x100ah lithium batteries, 3000 watt inverter.. Now wanting to understand if a 30 or even 40 amp DC to DC charger would be possible without upgrading the alternator. I have no other modifications putting extra demand on the alternator. Without straining the standard alternator would this upgrade to 30 or 40 be ok ? Thanks in advance.
I had a similar problem and I got a 1kWh Anker powerstation from Anker and the Anker Solix Alternator charger, which actually charges with more than 40A (I think 600W to 800W). This works nicely and the Alternator charger has some intelligence (only charges if the motor is running, only takes excess electricity, …) and can even feed back into the starter battery (which I think is very good but actually did not have to use so far). For me this is a simple setup and if I do not need the electricity, I take the Powerstation out of the car.
I ran my 30A victron DC-DC charger for a while on the original 70A gen3 generator with no issues. Charging 70Ah agm starter battery and 50 or 100Ah lifepo4.
Could see in the bt app the victron pulling 27A and the battery getting it too. It is the old victron the big Hot one, work just fine.
I swap batteries between the car and trailer. No solar input during the winter here and no Charging below zero either.
I only run a fridge and a heater though, have no need or would ever want any Converter or large appliances.
Get a portable power station like a Jackery, Bluetti, Anker etc. They are so much more useful than filling your car with wires and batteries. Solar and 12v charging options are easy.
