Upgrading Tyres in 2026

Thanks for all your help.

I’ve read quite a lot of reviews where people say KO2’s and KO3’s are difficult to balance. Not necessarily 215/75/r15’s though, just in general.

My biggest concern is the weight.
The Jimny has a hard enough time getting up to speed without adding a load of rotating mass.

This is what made me look at the Toyo’s. Apparently one of the lighter all terrain tyres out there.

The problem with balancing Jimny wheels is the size of cone required (112mm) and this leads to small errors in getting the wheel properly central.

A better way is to use ‘stud centre balancing’ but finding a tyre fitter who has a stud centre adaptor is a job in itself.

I recently had Insa Turbo mud tyres fitted to a set of wheels, the garage didn’t have a cone big enough, so I went the ‘balance bead route’, no issues with tyre balance at all and the muds are even heavier than KO2s.

The garage did tell me to drive it and see what it was like with no balance before installing beads, they told me that wheel balancing is not really required under 60mph.

If you aren’t going off road very often and not really in mud, almost any AT tyre will be fine. I run Maxxis Worm Drives, but have had Yokohama Dyna Pros, both chunky tyres and a good deal cheaper than BFGs.

To be honest I also had Geolandar ATs on, they were a great all round tyre.

When I picked up my SZ5 in 2019 the mechanic at the suzuki dealership said to me that my BFG KM3 mud terrains were a pain to get balenced. Now I don't know if thats because of the type of tire or because the dealership usually never touches anything more than standard road tires across suzuki cars so my tires were just something different for them making it a pain for them. They fitted afterwards the same tires to my LCV and Gen 3 and I didn't hear any complaints from them.
