Hi All.
Christmas greetings.
Decisions about roof rack options given the weight limitations . For extended travel (3 month Morocco)
Considering not using either of my roof racks (Upracks decent quality one, EBAY special basket one).
I have some heavy duty bars, considering bridging them with 2 x waffle boards and attaching with U Bolts. Then treating the waffle board as you would a roofrack base. Only things I would put up there would be 10l extra fuel, SWAG on occasion. Spade and Maxtrax. Besides managing the abrasive nature of the Waffle boards is there any reason why strapping to a waffle board in this manner would be a bad idea ?
The waffle boards are probably a similar weight to the rack but provide extra peace of mind to know they are there in case of need. Normal convenient recovery use case would be the maxtrax.
For the jimny do you recommend the 50mm thickness or would the 38mm ones be ok ?
Thanks in advance for any advice/recommendations.
Thanks and best wishes
Andrew

I have some 38s that I got of Jack on here that I carry on the roof, they are literally only just long enough with the bars on the factory roof studs but only just counts. They have proven useful for more farming jobs than ever I thought especially as spreader plates for ladders and the highlift but also as an emergency bridge on a failed culvert. They are a bit heavy though so being careful loading them on the roof is a must.

Hi
Thanks for your reply. So your comfortable to bridge with 38 without fear of breaking ? id rather have 38's unless 50's were necessary.

It was only a 14 inch pipe and going across otherwise flat land and only a kerb weight jimny and everything seemed fine. That said I have also been stood in the middle of one of them only supported at either end lifting rolls of felt onto a roof of a shed and that would comfortably be 185kg combined and yes it was quite bouncy but again seemed quite happy.

I would say 38mm will happily take 1500kg
