You can get a pretty good finish with rattle cans, but you do need the wheels off and inside to do it properly. Then strip them back, etch primer, 2 or 3 top coats and finally a couple of coats of lacquer.

The longer you can leave the top coats before applying the lacquer and then leave the whole lot to harden the better, I have left them for a week or two before. Of course that usually means a second set of wheels unless you take the car off the road.

Wheels without tyres fitted is better, but they will almost certainly mark new paint on the edges when fitting the tyres so you might have to do a bit of touch up.

The last time I did it this way around, I painted them, got the tyres fitted, did a bit of touch up, then applied the lacquer.

Playing cards are the answer to leaving the tyres on. And I am wondering if black is the other solution then they won't show up the brake dust. Pity the white suits the car.

I would always leave the tyre on and use playing cards, or pieces of thin plastic if the wheel isn’t bad, but its sometimes handy to clean and paint the inside as well.

I have used Halfords once or twice, it was OK, but prefer E-Tech for wheels, although I have only really used silver.

If you do not have access to a proper sandblaster or are ready to lay down lots of hours I would just matte down the paint that sits good, wire brush then sand the areas with chipped paint and spray with a proper base coat for alloy, then many layers of rattle can as described.
round off sharp edges as paint tends to chip away there first.

But if access to proper tools you can see my wheels done in the myjimny section.
By the coast in the UK there must be companies
servicing maritime industry with these proper tools. and proper powder coat too.
Everything I buy seems to have very bad powder coating. and really badly done. sharp edges not rounded before coating is very common, and no base coat. Local company here make parts for traffic, parks, marina and they can do galvanizing and powder coating with high quality.

Strong and powerful sandblasting would ruin alloy wheels so make sure those doing wheels know how to.
