Hi there,

having an issue with my 03 automatic where it makes an aggressive shunting sound, (feels like really aggressively dropping out of gear/stall attempt) when decelerating to a stop. Almost seems to happen more when crawling in traffic, have changed transmission oils a few times. Any pointers? Next place to look is union joints

I would agree with the u joints and add in the gearbox and transfer box mounting points. The automatic is usually fairly tough.

On a manual, the mounts at the tail of the gearbox are always gone (unless they have just been changed) which lets the tail of the gearbox lift up and drop down with load.  I imagine the auto is the same, so I'd start there, if you can lift the tail of the gearbox then the mounts are gone.

then I'd be looking at propshaft joints and the rubbers where the axle mounts to the trailing arms, and the panhard rod, on older vehicles the mountings rot and allow it to move sideways as the axle goes up & down.

If it suddenly breaks, go back to the last thing that you did before it broke and start looking there :)
