Simple question about a remap.

The hole I've made in the air box is at pretty much the same height and location as the standard air intake. I rarely need to go deeper than the top of the tyres and I hate the look of a snorkel so I'm quite happy with it.

Snorkels do-away with the restrictive intake bit behind the wind, and are quite a big diameter, so may actually improve air flow a bit.I had to laugh at the air box hole idea, seeing as I fitted a snorkel and sealed up the air box airtight for river crossings.
I'd hate to think how much more restricted the air intake is with a snorkel though.

I fabricated my own stainless one from 2.5" tube.
In retrospect I probably would have gone for a plastic one, just for ease of install and it's easily replaced.
A custom made air box with a larger / more free flowing filter would help too.

This might depend largely on where you drive, but, I've seen people get into trouble by driving into water without realizing just how deep it really was. The "top of the tyres" is fairly deep, deep enough that you probably can't see the bottom, and you only need to drop a few inches lower, say into an "unseen hole".

Yes, I'm well aware that lots of people do silly things off-road, including not checking the depth of water crossings. We see it all the time. As I say, I don't go through water deeper than the top of the tyres.

I don't believe the air filter is a restriction, at least on cars with less than 100hp. I ran mine with no filter to test this and there was no noticeable difference in performance. Whereas allowing more air into the air box by drilling it as I mentioned earlier made an immediately noticeable difference. A 2.5" snorkel will allow plenty of air flow.A custom made air box with a larger / more free flowing filter would help too.

So I have been looking at a lot of companies and many seem to offer just either a flash or box, often fitted at home or work. These worry me because I don't see how they are specific to my car especially as they don't seem to include time on the rollers. Surprisingly given the amount of posh cars in Harrogate there doesn't seem to be a local facility without going into Leeds which gives me trust issues especially when such places are openly offering pop and bang maps. I will keep looking.
