The fact that when it works it works well and when it doesn't there is nothing but instrument lights suggest an electrical fault somewhere between the key and the starter motor. Unfortunately most people that claim to be auto electrician these days seem to be limited to plugging into the obd11 port and relying on swapping parts sa directed by the computer, that's not to say they are all like that but it's definitely harder to find a good old boy who can run a multimeter properly. Where abouts in the world are you, we may have a member with local knowledge who can point you to a good outfit?

This is the reason I keep asking exactly which lights are on when the problem occurs - if it's between the key and the starter motor, then the charge, oil & check engine lights should be on, IF, as we are being told they are not on, the problem will probably be a little further up the chain, so the key switch itself.

The switch has multiple sets of contacts - one set for the ACC position that feed the radio, etc., two sets of ignition contacts and another set for the starter circuit - if the radio is coming on you know you have power to the switch, no ignition & no crank, I think will be the switch itself, and yes, they can be intermittent, it will usually get worse as they wear and eventually you'll get a complete failure.
