My Jimny made a RAV 4 friend today...
I would be interested to hear from people who have owned both what the differences in driving experience is?
(Obviously there is one clear winner 😉)

Depends on the variant but they are fairly quick and behave just like a heavy tall normal car. The one I borrowed was running out of talent on one of my worser farm tracks, dragging it's guts and it's clutch wasn't happy. Compared to my land cruiser or any of my jimny that just drive up normally. Meh.

Look more like cousins than friends, with the same paint job

Not a true off roader, didn't consider it before pulling the trigger on the JB74.
Being a farmer, I do need the real thing.

If it suddenly breaks, go back to the last thing that you did before it broke and start looking there

I had a Mk1 RAV4 (Like most cars, the MK1 is by far the best looking, best built and best engineered, before they cheapened it by engineering it down to a price) Mine had the 4 speed auto, with automatic difflock, front & rear sunroofs, separate folding rear seats and it was SWB too
Anyway, compared to the Gen 4- for tarmac (wet & dry), speed humps, rough potholed road, the odd bit of beach, unsurfaced tracks it was infinitely better. Not tail happy like the Jimny due to permanent 4WD, much better road tuned suspension, it would fly over speedhumps that have me out of the seat in the jimny at walking pace, quite the best coil sprung ride I've ever experienced.
("Why don't you still have it then if it was that good, you heretic?" you all say. Low twenties MPG round town when I drove 200 miles a week is my answer)
There was no low range, but plenty of torque & power from the 2 litre engine. The engineering of the transfer case built into the front transaxle is just beautiful.
It was a different car aimed at a different market, they call them a softroader for a reason
It is one of the four cars out of all those I have owned that I wish I still had in good condition in a Jay Leno style air conditioned garage (Classic Range Rover, Rover P6, MG Montego (The only manual on my favourite list) and the RAV4.)
I suppose the question is "Would I swap the Gen4 for that RAV4?" (Assuming the RAV4 was in preserved showroom condition, I'd be an idiot to consider a 200K miles one full of rust!)
I genuinely don't know the answer. 20MPG wouldn't bother me now I don't work and do under 1000 miles a year.
