What do you guys think of 185/85r16? Supposedly thin tyres are better for off road, only except for sand/beach situations. Also as it is a thin tyre, it shouldn't be much heavier than stock size, which I have read is important for jimny's as they are sensitive to increased wheel size/weight. Would going for a bigger diameter tyre that is narrower than stock mostly cancel out the negatives of a larger diameter tyre? You would also get a 140mm lift, small but a lift nonetheless.

Online i can find yokohama geolander AT's in this size, and i hear they are a good AT.

Of course big downside is having to get new rims - but that can be plus for some!

There are several different aspects to be considered here, and in my opinion, going to a "bigger diameter tyre that is narrower than stock" will not cancel the negatives of a larger diameter tyre.

First point of concern - gearing - a larger diameter tyre will impact the overall gearing of the vehicle, in most cases, dependent on how much larger you go, acceleration will be negatively impacted, go too large and you may find that the higher gears are no longer usable because the engine is now operating outside of it's "power band", this can create problems for off road usage that can only be corrected by changing either the axle or transfer case gearing.

The overall gearing change will also impact fuel consumption, usually negatively.

Second point of concern - braking - a narrower tire, even if it's the same weight as the stock tire on a larger rim will move that weight further from the assembled wheel's center of rotation, which increases inertia, this has a minor impact on acceleration, outweighed by the impact of the gearing mentioned above, where it really makes a difference is on braking power, it will require more pedal effort to slow the car from the same speed, more heat will be generated and with this additional heat, there is risk of brake fade and warped rotors.

The only advantage of a narrower tire is reduced rolling resistance, which does matter in sand - negating your theory that thin tyres are "worse", and possibly increased ground pressure, which can be a double edged sword, especially in mud - is there a firmer layer under that slop that you hope the thinner tyre can reach because of the increased ground pressure, or is it "bottomless slop" that you want to "float over" in which case, a wider, smaller diameter tyre that you have the optimum gearing to spin (for self cleaning) might get you through.

Wider/thinner tyre choice is going to be dependent on many variables, but larger diameter - the physics don't change.

Not used them but they are a new tyre not a remould so no reason to think they are a problem.
