Hi, I have a 2002 Jimny 1.3 Auto. We've been having overheating issues, had a new rad (garage said it was leaking), but it's happened a couple of times since. Theory now is that coolant is getting into a valve.
I have 2 choices, get rid, or take this opportunity to fix and upgrade - but I need to find a reliable specialist in Kent (Tonbridge ish), as I think I'd like to get this sorted and find a way of getting more power and generally upgrade and future proof.
Can anyone point me in the right direction of a good specialist who could help?
Many thanks
Richard

While I love Tonbridge for going shopping on holiday it's far too far away for me to offer a recommendation. You do sound to be having head/gasket trouble though, I had similar with my last jimny.

Ha, thanks - love Harrogate!
It's an odd one as there doesn't seem to be water in the oil. But does sound like a head gasket issue.

Could someone please explain how we get a defective head gasket diagnosis from occasional overheating, with no tests conducted and apparently, no cross contamination?
It seems quite a leap for me...
Shouldn't basic testing be performed before suggesting a defective head gasket? Wet & dry compression tests, perhaps test for the presence of hydrocarbons in the cooling system?
My first question would be what form does the overheating take - is it blowing coolant out? Is it just the temperature gauge rising?
My second question is when does it overheat? When idling in traffic? At motorway speeds?
More questions may follow when the first ones are answered.
For what it's worth, the most common symptom of overheating is perhaps blowing the coolant out of the expansion reservoir, and the most common cause of coolant being blown out of the reservoir is a defective radiator cap.
Any competent garage, it doesn't need to be a Suzuiki or Jimny specialist should have the necessary tools to pressure test a cooling system to see if holds pressure, and to test a radiator cap. The same goes for compression tests.

I agree with Fordem. I had a problem with my LC doing much the same and a new rad cap cured it.
Major suggestion here is that you must use the correct Suzuki part either from a Suzuki dealer or the Jimny shop.

Very rarely you hear of problems with the m13 engine. And based on Lamberts experience he gives his tip on what he think might be the problem. I totally agree with him.
We been around these cars too long I guess.
I also seen examples of decent garages trying several of the suggested solutions, even changing head gaskets to little effect as the cracks in the head are difficult to find.
Often there is only a slight over pressure in the coolant. Seems intermittent at first.
Recently a local friend had overheating issues, so I offered him my old m13 engine that came out of my car when I did the m16 swap.
He paid the garage to try many of the other solutions first of course, but after some weeks he came to pick up my engine.
Not saying it is allways the head, but often.
