Hi,When the vehicle is under load (going up a bit of a hill) or accelerating it makes a noise thats sounds like cogs/gears slipping. (please see video) I think it may be the transfer box? Any ideas and ways to check please? The vehicle has manual locking wheel hubs, but the front wheels do not seem to be turning when locked.

(cant work out how to attach a video clip so here's a YouTube link)

Thanks

Does it only do it in 4x4 or does it do it on road in 2x4 also?

In 4x4 it could be a damaged cv joint. If its in 4x2 then it is likely the transfer box chain slipping.

My bet would be on the transfer case chain making that sound as Lambert says.
When you say the front wheels aren't turning, I presume you mean they are freewheeling and not driving? If you select 4wd on the transfer case and try to turn the front driveshaft by hand with your hubs unlocked (while stationary obviously) that should tell you if it is a axle or transfer case issue. If you can rotate the front driveshaft, you have a transfer case issue. The front driveshaft should be locked to the rear axle when in 4wd.
In any case (pun intended) I would definitely be checking that chain out, so you will soon find out what's going on.
Hope that helps.

Yes they are freewheeling and not "being powered" as such.
I will check the chain.
Thank you
