K&N Airfilter - Have one long term, any issues? was created by Scimike
Just asking those that have used a K+N filter long term if they ever had issues with it upsetting the MAF sensor.
Nice to know specifically Jimny GEN3, Lambert believe you have one fitted?
I have always liked the idea, not for performance, but the wash and reuse aspect of the filter. I have used them in the past on my older carburetted vehicles and they have been great, but I have seen stories of the oil used contaminating the MAF on fuel injected engine's.
Hence my question.
It's possible these stories are fiction or a result of owner's incompetent, you know the ones, chip oil is the universal lubricant of choice.
K&N say it's nonsense, but then they would. So those that have them any such issues?
Still fancy one on the Jimny to release that extra 70bhp I am sure is just hiding away
ThanksMike

The K&N filters flow better than paper, so good for performance, however as a rule they don't filter quite as well, although marginal.
For me the biggest issue is, they clog up a lot quicker than a paper filter and when dirty are likely to flow worse than a dirty paper filter. They therefore require cleaning a lot more often compared to when you'd change a paper filter.
The cleaning kit as a rule also costs more than most paper filters. So the K&N will cost more and require more maintenance to even match the performance of paper filters.
As for MAF issues, they are possible. Usually by applying too much oil after cleaning (they need the oil to aid filtering). Done correctly they shouldn't cause an issue in this regard.

Well over a hundred thousand miles and absolutely no issues. Cleaned at 50k instead of the recommended 100k and even then the debris that was washed out was negligible. As for the extra 5000bhp and improvements in throttle response etc etc I find that most beneficial when racing Ferraris when I have my big trailer on the back, I like to let them think they have a chance!

Thank you everyone for your comments. Looks like the MAF issue is a bit of a red herring, although I can see potential for issues if you mess up the cleaning in a big way.
Can't say myself that I have experienced them clogging up quicker than a paper filter, and cleaning, if done properly, uses very little product in my experience.
It's a good point though, I can see this happening in extreme dust conditions due to the oil on the surface holding the particles against the filter.
For me and road use I doubt this will occur. I currently use them on my carburetted motorcycles and it's not something I see on these, so don't expect the Jimny to be any different (I don't off-road).
Appreciate all the feedback and my filter now on order.
One of my vintage vehicles (1960 ) has a Dyson style cyclone / oil filled "dustbin" air filter that works very well and can be cleaned In the field with only the items you have with you. A great practical design that highlights the move towards the " throw away " society.

My 135 has an oil bath and gauze air filter and it is immensely effective. Paper filters were only invented so that vehicle manufacturers could relive you of more money at service time. There's profit in selling a replacement with a huge markup over cost that isn't available if the item is user serviceable.
