Freeway RPM Auto vs Manual ? was created by Francis26
Hi.

I’m looking at buying a 2021Jimny, but I’m being really indecisive about what transmission to go with.
I need to drive the freeway to get to my local 4x4 trails. Which transmission sits at the lower RPM’s at 100km/hr? If it was a modern transmission (5 gears +) it was probably be an easier decision.

If your primary use is off-road, then go with the auto. If you are more concerned about on-road revs then go with the manual. The auto is only a 4 speed, and when it changes down to 3rd for hills you are at 5500rpm.

My new auto gen3 is much calmer on the motorway and is pulling around 3200 to 3800 in normal cruising. My older manual was just under 4000. The newer 4s may be slightly different.

Temeraire (2018 quasar grey automatic)
One of the last 200ish of the gen3s, probably.

I guess that is down to personal preference. Personally prefer manuals off road.

I beleive the manual JB74 is geared for approx 20mph/1000rpm in top. So 60mph (near to 100km/h) is about 3000rpm on the tacho.

The traction control on the JB74 works very well with the auto. With the manual it's very easy to stall when the traction control kicks in.
