Replied by Groundworker on topic If you have a roof rack you need to watch this
Interesting, I read some years ago someone questioning the wisdom of a roof tent for overlanding, they pointed out that in Africa especially you don't want to add weight to the roof.
I trial with a guy who was bought up in Kenya and he was saying they just camped in normal tents as kids, as he pointed out if you're in a roof tent expecting to be safe from lions etc, you might get a shock.
As the article I read pointed out, why carry a 100kg roof tent when you can carry a 10kg tent in the car?
If you do tip your vehicle over, your roof tent won't be a lot of use, probably won't affect the one in your car much.
Weights all round 4x4's is interesting, I saw a jimny tip over a few months ago, and I'm sure it wasn't helped by large, wide tyres, I don't understand the science but there is an issue between sprung and unsprung weight.
Lift kit, massive wheels and tyres, winch, large spare on back door, external roll cages all make for an interesting brew in a small narrow vehicle (speaking as someone who rolled theirs one and three quarter times with only a 2" lift fitted!)

Thanks for sharing. We all have different background knowledge. Some people might did not pay attention in the school when they were told about phisics, statics and math and others will find these things obvious and asking why this was not obvious? I belong to the latter group and always wondered why some people put metal roofrack on factory roof rails of a Jimny. They perhaps wonder what 'weakest link in the chain' means? It's a good eye opener for those people.

Absolutely. I qualified in engineering and consequently have a firm grasp of the concept of factor of safety. This video puts it into stark relief way better than I could.

It doesn't give much to play with, if I remember rightly it's only 35kg on a Jimny roof, and using his calculation if going off road that's down to 23kg. A front runner full roof rack weighs 27kg.
