So I have seen dashboard trays for Gen 4s and look good and I wanted something similar for my Gen 3. I wanted to be able to hold my phone in view with tilt and roll gauges since my Android head unit and Torque Pro doesn’t have accelerometers available. I also wanted somewhere to keep glasses and other bits and bobs without them falling on the floor.

I had a good look round and couldn’t find anything so decided to make a tray that would sit on the dash and stay in place without glue. It had to be big enough to hold my phone and glasses and also provide a flat stable place for a cup of coffee when resting.

Here is the finished home made tray

A second shot with my phone

It was made from some 3mm plastic sheet I had lying around and bolted together with angle strip. Finally it is covered in plastic trim left over from my parcel shelf and then a rubber mat (the only thing I bought) to provide a non slip surface at the top. Construction photos

I took it for a test drive, great until going round a sharp bend when it ended up in the passenger footwell. I decided I needed some non slip on the bottom and whilst looking found a dashboard mat that might just be a good alternative and it was only £12 delivered.

It’s just rubber, doesn’t use glue, but super sticky, look at this

Yes that it is stuck to the conservatory window.

Unfortunately it doesn’t provide a flat surface in the Jimny, it slopes backwards, but it does a fairly good job, so it was back to plan A. I used some of the rubber mat to line the inside of my DIY tray and then another piece just sat on the Jimny dashboard, now my DIY tray stays in place no matter how sharp the corner.

The mat I bought sits quite nicely in my DIY tray and holds the phone well, so this is the solution for the present.

Nice! Do you intend to pursue intellectual property rights or can I steal the design? The amount of drinks that have ended up in Dreadnaughts air vents!

No IPR on this one, unless you stamp them out in the 1,000s and make a ton of money.

I made a cardboard template first, I could measure it and send the dimensions, then again you will probably make a better one than me.

It’s an ideal wet weather lockdown project, in that there is nowt else to do and took ages.
