M13A head gasket change was created by MikeJames2
Hi all,
I have a Jimny which overheats after a motorway run. After changing the thermostat, radiator and topping up the viscous fan fluid to no avail I did a gas-in-water check which came back positive so I will change the head gasket.
The workshop manual suggests I need to remove the oil pan. Can anybody tell me why I need to do this?

A guess would be to ensure that there is no water contamination. Service instructions always err on the side of caution.... not a bad path...

According to the garage that did mine the sump has to come off as its impossible to seal the front cover otherwise.

Good idea about the water. I'd never considered that.
If it is required to seal the front cover then I guess I need to do it.
I've only just cleared the last oil spill off the drive!
Thanks all

I'd remove the engine to do it......saves loss of temper and in the long run it's easier.
The sump front cover would be interesting to get right....the dowels are the problem

Thanks for the advice Keithy.
Trouble is i've always said that if I take out the 1.3 I will be putting a 1.6 back in! This is a dilemma
