Alternator change out

Been having belt squeal for some time, usually on start up but occasionally at other times. Although told it was not the alternator, I decided it was! When the noise stopped the revs would rise, and it also seemed to be affected with electrical load. Now changed the alternator, and the noise has so far stopped (but limited use means can't be 100% sure). As I have only recently started working on the car instead of letting someone else do it, I have been doing some basic 'how to' write ups to help other novices. Not sure if these help any one on here, but will keep sticking them on as I go.

If your belt squeals after starting the car and then stops squealing, then the belt tension is slightly to low.
After starting the alternator produces almost maximum electricity to re-load your battery. This has a high resistance on the belt. After the battery is charged, the resistance of the belt goes down and the squealing stops.
I personally like it this way because I can be sure that:
- the belt is not over tensioned
- the alternator works and charges properly
And if checked your old alternator, was it still ok? This is what I would think.

Me101 , these are the symptoms from my daughters ...both...Jimnys ..& yes it was alternators. The squealing on start up espiecally on cold/ damp days would normally indicate a slipping fan belt, so the advice was understandable ...it seems from recent posts and understanding that this can be considered a character of a Jimny alternator though.

Neighbour had this on her car, and in spite of numerous belt changes and adjustments, it turned out to be the alternator - the more it got loaded up - radio; wipers; heater motor etc, the more it shrieked. Cx of the alternator fixed the issue - was probably a bearing seizing up

Hi,
RainerK - the belts were checked by myself and the garage, the tension was fine.
Fossie - I would not consider this a character, it was really annoying / embarrassing, and earache from the wife was worse
Max Headroom - 99% confident it was the alternator, lots of black on the front of it which I think will have come from the belt slipping on it
Cheers

I forgot to add that the alternator output was perfect.
I'd picked up the car for my neighbour on a very cold rainy morning and it was after I left the garage and started switching on all the ancilliaries that it started shrieking like a banshee, so I had to do an about-turn and take it back.
The subsequent alternator Cx cured the problem and its never behaved like it since
