If you plan to off road. You should have suitable recovery points. You never know when you may need them.

As an off road scrutineer I cannot condone such activities and would highly advise others not to do this. Many accidents occur due to poor recovery techniques and inadequate or stupid ways of attaching ropes to vehicles.Scimike wrote:
I can't recall ever being challenged about this on the sites I've been to in my Land Rover, it has no aftermarket recovery points as such. It's been pulled out by the bumper, chassis, towbar and axles, in fact anything we could get a strap around safely. So I don't know?

Yokohama Geolanders, Sony head unit, NAUTILUS Air Horn, DRL conversion, Rear cargo space, Elvis Bobblehead, transfer Guard, Indian hanging Elephant, Koni Heavy track dampers, Custom SS exhaust, Voodoo Doll, Adventure Rack with LED ight bar, vintage ERIBA caravan usually attached (yes it's slow)

I actually totally agree with you. I don't want others to do as I have done or seen, circumstances in individual cases will dictate what is safe or not.
Just trying to highlight that off road pay and play have never insisted on "bolt on" recovery points in my experience.
Have fun and stay safe.

I like the way it bolts both sides of the chassis making a strong point. Would having screw in eye bolts work. with pull off covers for the holes in the bumper for us part time off roaders? That wouldn't mean a change in insurance.

This is also an interesting subject.
As far as I can tell most bolt on recovery points do not come with any certification to clarify max loading etc. Different companies offer different solutions, so how can you tell which is better ??
Many factors come into play, the materials used in the construction, how they attach to the vehicle, how strong is the attachment point and have they bothered to test the product.
I don't know how you quantify this to pick the best product.
So is a DIY solution any worse - maybe, or possibly not, it's hard to quantify for the same reasons.
Just throwing this out as a subject for discussion as I don't know the answer.

I don't think telling your insurance is such a big problem that you need to hide the recovery points, most will not have a clue what they are, some may add a little to the premium, but not much. It's also a good idea that they are easy to access as you are usually waste deep in mud, so you don't want to be passing a rope through a small cut out in the bumper. If you want them just fit and tell your insurance.
I have towbar, expedition roof rack and LED lighting, all noted by my insurance, no increase in premium.
Just my opinion.
Have fun

no sorry, what I mean is a hard fitting to chassis with screw in eye bolts for off road recovery. Remove eye bolts for on road so low risk of injury or damage to people or veh's. Most modern cars have a captive hidden recovery point behind the front bumper with a screw in eye bolt.

Ah I see what you mean.
Yes it could work, but it's not the "off road" look that people also want. So I can't see a company like Jimnybits going for this solution as it's not got the correct aesthetics, infact you can't see them
Make an interesting DIY project and if correctly done I can't see why it will not work.
