I put larger tyres on a FL2 to get 25mm lift, the loss of power was massive and that was with a 2.2 diesel with turbo. The Gen4 has little power + low gearing, If you use it as a road car disabled scooters will be beeping you and your clutch will burn out. Big tyres = new gearing or parts will brake.

Hippos and freepigs are made of chocolate though so any size increases on the tyres are going to be a problem. The Jimny is a much tougher creature and will stand a reasonable increase in tyre size fairly well. The problem is that without a lift there isn't actually that much room in the wheel wells before the tyres rub which is at odds with the size of the wheel arch as it looks like you should be able to get 35s in without any problems but you can't. Also the difference between a 195.80 and a 215.75 isn't actually that much but it could make a difference.

Sorry I've just re read that, you put enough tyre under a freelander to gain 25mm extra clearance so you actually added 50mm to the diameter? I'm not surprised it didn't like it.

As far as i know 235 is a straight swap.
I can highly recommend toyo open countey at plus tyres. They are a lovely balance on/off road.
And yes, the 235 on this forum was ash's blue sz5. Looks well nice.
Edit; However whilst they may look boss, i defer to the other members superior knowledge of the jimny. On mine are 215's, and this has made my jimby a joy to drive. Perhaps a safe bet going for 215 over 235.
All the best.

I'd love to hear about the driving experience from someone who did a straight swap to 235's. That is insane if we can do that.

I am thinking about getting the 205s Toyo when I swap.
