Hi. I have just had my Jimny back from it's MOT. The MOT guy suggested I get rid of my vehicle within 12 months because it is corroded and the welding isn't worth it apparently.

On the MOT certificate it says...

'Vehicle structure is corroded but structural rigidity is not significantly reduced Offside Front (Body mount area)'
'Integral body structure or chassis corroded within 30cm of a mounting, but not seriously affecting overall security Nearside Rear (inner sill)'

I'd just like to know what everybody's thoughts are. If I should try sell the vehicle before it gets any worse? Or is it worth getting somebody to weld it? Or is the MOT guy just over exaggerating?

They do rust there and it can be a tricky repair. My suggestion would be to get underneath it on a dry day and examine it closely from front to back, checking for corrosion on the body shell and chassis, including what has been reported by the MOT tester.

Then take it to a reputable car restorer / welder and ask them to double check it and give you a price for all remedial work.

Check behind the headlights also when looking it over, removing the front wheel arch liners to see from underneath them.

If you like the car and are prepared to spend that amount on it to keep it going, go for it. If not, move it on while is still has a substantial amount of test on it.

I would add to that, is the Jimny your daily driver or a second car? If it's a second car it could be a good opportunity to learn the skill of welding. Most technical colleges will run a beginner's course and many parts are available from the bigjimny store or can be made with a little bit of time and effort and a reasonable welder can be had second hand for sensible money. Obviously if it is a daily then paying for it to be done in one go by a professional is more sensible.
