Fill front hub with grease was created by Clint68
Hi, my 2007 Jimny has just passed M.O.T with one advisory. The front nearside hub is leaking, the M.O.T examiner said the hub will last the life of the car as long as it’s regularly greased. How do I get into the hub to add more grease? A friend has said to remove shims or go through the front of the hub where the bearing is located.

I am including a picture with 2 parts circled, are these the shims my friend is talking about where I add more grease. This is not my actual hub but a random picture I found online, mine is obviously full of grease. Any replies comments would be much appreciated.

Thanks

Hi,
You don't want to be adding more grease, your MOT tester may think it's like a Land Rover hub. Normally a leak is a sign of Kingpin bearing failure, but it looks like someone has done them if the seal ring is anything to go by. If this the case then forget it the MOT tester comment. If they have not been done then they could be failing, but again if no noticeable play I would forget until next year.

Edit
Ah the pictures not your hub. So your kingpin bearings may be failing. The leak you can see is differential oil that gets past the inner seal or oil / water mix. See the wiki on Kingpin bearing or Martin's online video. Don't add more grease it's a waste of time, and the part once assembled is sealed and should not require any maintenance.
If unsure ask away.
All the best
Mike

Scimike is spot-on. There is a git-seal on the halfshaft, it'll be that that is leaking.

Martin has a very good video which will show you how to get to that seal, but while you have it all apart, if the king-pin bearings are old it might be worth changing them as you'll have everything apart to get at the seals, and it'll save you doing it all again later
My advice would be to do both sides at the same time

Martin's kin-pin video here

Another good guide here showing some possible pitfals that could be encountered
The biggest problem I had was none of these, but fitting the hub assemply back on without the bottom bearing falling out - the left side was an utter pig for some reason, but I got there in the end.
I was astonished at the amount of dirt and crap that had found its way in

IF IT AINT BROKE, KEEP FIXING IT UNTIL IT IS
