Hello,
Im considering to buy a Jimny 2004 with only 75000 kms (47000 miles).
I test drove it yesterday, all seems very nice except for a whining noise in (almost) all gears. (while it was in 2WD)
I'm not familiar with jimny's so I don't now if the sound of whining is normal.
I made a video of it and hope someone can tell me more about the whining noise.
Jimny whining VIDEO
Thanks in advance,
van Dijk / The Netherlands

I’m currently having the same issue, up until fourth and exclusively from setting off at a light. So along with this guy I’d be grateful for a explanation. I have had the Fan belt and Alternator belt tensioned recently it’s that helps.

A Jimny is very basic and there's quite a lot of mechanical noise intrusion into the cabin especially on older examples. To me the noise in the video doesn't seem particularly out of character but trying to judge it from a phone video over the internet is not ideal. I would suggest that if you are able to, having a drive in a couple of different Jimny is probably the best way to determine if one is particularly worse than the average.

I'd agree with Lambert. It sounds okay from here but it's difficult to tell over the phone.
They all have a bit of whine. At that age it's due an oil change of the front and rear differentials and the transfer and gearbox. Should do it a lot of good and help quieten it down a bit.
Don't expect miracles though a Jimny is basic with very little in the way of soundproofing.

I know nothing about how a gen 3 jimny sounds inside. But i do know how a gen 4 sounds, and to my ear this sounds normal in relation to how mine sounds. (Yours being a tiddle bit louder) but as others have said, the video is iffy to judge from.
I love that tranny whine on jimny's!! Its awesome.
But dont take my word on this, its just that it seems pretty normal to my ear coming from the gen 4.

Just sounds like mine used to similar mileage before all my mods
my question is are you able to work on it yourself
Has all parts are easily to come by
changing all oils for good quality would be advised
