Whatcha. My near side headlight motor that adjusts for load is making a funny noise. It's sort of shunting the motor back and forth but without moving the headlight. The adjustment is fine and works well. Plug and unplug hasn't affected it and neither is wiggling the wires. Oh and its intermittent. Before I start pricing up a replacement can any of the electrical wizards offer advice?

If it suddenly breaks, go back to the last thing that you did before it broke and start looking there

The position sensor inside the motor unit is likely dirty/worn out. I'm sure I read on here once about opening the adjuster up to clean it, but I can't find the thread. The lights stay in one position all the time, and it causes wear in one spot, like the noisy volume control on an old fashioned radio.
If you take the adjuster off the headlight- it does come off, there is a ball & socket joint, and open it up, there will be a little peg on the screw mechanism that slides a small volume control up and down on the circuit board- that is what wants cleaning (well replacing really, but you won't get one)
My offside one used to suffer from this, there is a sort of odd cross between a scrunching noise and a high pitched whine, took me a while to trace it to the level motor.
On mine, waving the lights full up and down and back a couple of times with the control on the dash fixed it for a few weeks, as did simply adjusting the lights by one click, so the sensor is in a different place.
I have an idea that Martin unplugged one of his- it freezes the light in position, because of this.

This isn't a jimny, but it should give the general idea

I'm pleased that you are happy to have a go- take a few pictures, they might help someone else.
Make sure that sensor potentiometer engages correctly, if it doesn't the motor just keeps running and hits the end of the movement, it buzzes I think, it jumps out of engagement on some types for no reason.
The whole thing is just a servo, it moves the screw until the voltage is the same as on the setting control
