Looking at their rules I have to sign a disclaimer saying I’ve off roaded before and I know what to do when a hill climb fails.

Looks like I need some off-road instruction before I think about anything else.

That’s a very kind offer lambert
I’m in no rush
It’s just I’ve not used the jimny off road
Only gravel surfaced tracks and a bit of a rough lane to get to a campsite in the lakes, across grass fields etc

I drove it lots in the snow we had at the beginning of the year and it was great we wouldn’t have been able to get out of the village without it some of the days.

I’d just like to have a go at some off-roading that’s not too extreme
It seems daft to have a quite capable 4x4 but not use it off road.

Worth having a look at one of the organised tours (either by paying for them or joining GLASS/ATUK as Maverick says) and tagging along. They are great as a nice introduction to green-laning. GLASS has just got the new Trailwise2 going and thats really useful for finding lanes on your doorstep, but you do need to check with the council site to see if its legally open/driveable ;-) GLASS & ATUK also have regular tag-along tours with their reps which are a great introduction to lanes and meeting folk.

Pay & Play sites tend to end up with vehicle damage, wear as these guided tours or tag-along tours are gentle and avoid damaging anything serious  I have done a day out with Kielder mountain rescue (Kielder safari on facebook) last year that only cost £60 with a free fry-up and for the mountain rescue charity. Pretty good, some muddy/boggy stuff and loads of great views. Well organised and no problems. Theres others like Trails and Tracks who do Yorkshire/Durham/Northumberland tours (but it'll hurt your wallet!).
