My "Rules" of 4x4 vehicles ( omitting all the assistive technology etc)

Rule 1. Steering
2wd car - two steered wheels
4wd car - two steered wheels

Therefore 4wd cars don't not steer better than 2wd cars

Rule 2. Braking
2wd car - four braked wheels
4wd car - four braked wheels

Therefore 4wd cars don't not brake better than 2wd cars

Rule 3. Acceleration
2wd car - two powered wheels
4wd car - four powered wheels

Therefore 4wd cars accelerate better than 2wd cars

Rule 4. Considering rules 1 to 3, 4wd gives the ability to accelerate into trouble quicker than 2wd cars. Remember this when being overtaken by a 4wd car on ice and snow :)
