Oh my life, I just found out that my digital caliper has been seriously misreading sizing. Are these things just rubbish. I have had a few now where they just stop working; no amount of trying new batteries does any good. Fortunately recently I have used it more for size comparisons rather than taking an actual reading.

Guess it's like everything else, you get what you pay for.
We got them around our shop and they are used alot here but they are probably of industrial standard. Usually ok down to 5 hundreds of a mm or so.
Mitutoyo is good but so is probably other well known brands as well.
I tend to forget to switch off battery powered things so i like the old school type better.

Unless you're paying serious money digital calipers aren't a reliable source of measuring anything to any great degree of repeatable accuracy. At best they are a guide. For accuracy you really want to be using known branded equipment intended for the measurements you're taking.

I suppose I can't really tell how inaccurate they can be as I am not in engineering but I do know that when using my lathe the digital ones (when they work) like I have from Aldi or other sources have been really good to two decimal places. I do tend to use them relatively though. If you asked me to turn something to say 12.38mm I would not be sure that my caliper would be delivering that.

I worked in the automotive supply chain for years and the quality guys used Mitutoyo for their callipers. I understand that there is some skill involved in using them, repeatable accuracy is not a given. Calibration with engineered billits before and after use, any variation and the tests are scrapped and repeated, a very robust system to remove the human err.
