How should I drive on a pebble beach? was created by fowleronline
The beach near me is often driven on by Landrovers, 4x4 pickups and so on, for fishing, beach combing and so on. No one abuses the beach and the driving I have seen has been respectful. So putting aside whether it is legal or not, where can I find advice on how to deal with this sort of surface.
Google has not been helpful this time on HOW to drive. I had a little venture on the other evening with my standard Jimny and got a bit of a fright as it started to bog down! I selected 4wd and carried on towards the sand, not a great distance. The beach is rounded pebbles of all sizes and it is very deep in places where it has been put down for coastal defence. It is even hard work walking on it, they are like marbles. There are broad areas of sand too, some of which is very solid, some is very soft. There are no dunes! The picture is not the exact beach but gives an idea.
So... obviously 4x4, but go quickly to skim the top, or slow for more control? Or what would you advise please?

That's a tough one mate. A few things spring to mind.
Get out and walk it 1st, yes it takes time but not as long as digging your car out!
The beach is hard to get traction on as the pebbles roll over each other like marbles.
If its a short bit I would use 4wd high and boot it to get to the other side.
A long stretch, I would be tempted to go slow in 4wd low so if it was getting heavy going you could stop
before you get yourself into trouble. Its a tough call and only trial and error will tell. :)
Another thought that has just come to me. Go in a strait line, turning will slow you down. :)

Good call Jack. If not for putting under the wheels, the waffle boards are good for standing your jack on if bogged down in
such conditions. :)

Select 4x4 before you need it, travel briskly in a low gear and keep the revs high. If it feels like it's sinking in apply more throttle.
