Thanks Rappey, you replied while I was typing - the local beach is regularly used by fishermen etc on quads and other large 4x4s seems to be accepted, but as you say I will check with the LA.
Cheers

Don't be too hasty with the modifications, a standard Jimny with appropriate tyres for the predominant surface where it is used will go a very long way. By that what I mean is up here in the Yorkshire Dales the vast majority of the lanes are hard packed stone and as such are passable with care on road biased tyres. If however you are down on Salisbury Plain the nasty gooey bottomless muck they have there requires mud terrain tyres to even get a look in. In essence don't think big knobbly tyres are vital just because you are no longer on tarmacadam. Also worth considering is how you intend to use the vehicle as to the most suitable modifications, if it is a toy that only goes on the road to get to lanes then big suspension and lumpy tyres can be weighed in favour for their advantages off road. If however it is the daily drive and only sees the countryside once every two months then having big flexible suspension that won't go round corners without inducing motion sickness in a merchant seaman and tyres that struggle with wet tarmacadam will get very old very quickly .

Im not trying to be a fun sponge far from it. If you take a while to see what you want from your Jimny and upgrade sympathetically towards that goal then you will be mightily impressed with your new Jimny.

As above, dont be hasty with mods... give it a go with your tyres that are on the vehicle and go with another vehicle..
I have evil mud tyres, cuts your mpg in half, and in all honesty its lack of articulation that is usually the killer, and ruts that are deep enough to swallow you due to extremists with the biggest tyres they can get !

Very well thought out and written response!

I often think "we" have gone too far with the modifications required

Trust me, nothing would make me happier than the freedom to turn mine into a two wheel drive, sports car munching, tarmac warrior, I would be in hog heaven! But that is not what it is used for on a daily basis so the 4x4 stays as does the standard soft suspension. To a point. Half the interior is missing and other things have been replaced as they have worn out that yes help on the farm side but are also useful on a weekend, for example the very expensive bfg tyres, capable on the farm but infinitely superior to the Bridgestones on the road. Focused and sympathetic.

I know what you mean! i was surprised how far i managed to get on the last outing with basically 2wd 90% of the time. its at the point now where ive put that much into it i dont want to damage it, which sort of takes the fun away a bit. Its also got to the point where it will (more or less) go up anything you point it at, with minimal skill required. Still fun though :-)
