Replied by Young Pretender on topic Jimny & Towing (is there a mod to allow 2WD Lo Range)
As I say I have a very good article written by a journalist who sat down with VOSA to try and wade through all the BS for some clarity. If I'm interpreting the point below correctly then it would appear that the Busta's comments above are correct?

"The Vehicle and Operator Services Agency (VOSA) tells us it is permissible to tow a trailer with a plated gross weight that is higher than the towing capacity of the vehicle, as long as the combined weight of the vehicle, trailer and load does not exceed the gross train weight (GTV). This applies even if adding the two gross weights together exceeds the train weight figure, says VOSA, because this relates to the actual 'in use' weight of the vehicle and trailer combination including any load"

However, when you start towing for commercial reasons, and depending on the purpose, then you have other legal considerations around using tachographs to record driver hours. So this may change the reasoning above (?)

"The key point regarding tachograph regulations is that they are not based on actual weights, but theoretical maximum weights."

So this is where you may need to swat up - if your business will become dependant on towing said machinery.

Tachograph rules while complex are fairly simple to determine if they apply. Essentially if you are towing for your own benefit say a builder collecting materials or a farmer moving livestock that is considered ancillary to your business and is exempt. If you are towing for hire or reward say delivery of caravans or moving someone else's livestock then you will need full tachograph cover and possibly an operator licence and that is complicated.

You could keep a spare Jimny in the back for emergency's. :)

If your use falls within the taco regulations you would possibly also need a CPC licence. :(

If you want a 2WD Low the easiest (IMO) way is the manual hubs.
But, as someone said - I also doubt you'd need it for towing. If you're stuck uphill and need the extra strength you can easily start uphill on 4WD Low as long as you go straight.

And honestly speaking - I would rather think of modding the clutch in the first place - if you wan to do some serious, regular, high-load towing you'll get a lot opportunities to burn the clutch :)
