4wd or 4x4 was created by Solas
Looking for an outer cv joint on ebay! But confused as to what my jimny is! Some cv joints will fit the 4wd but not the 4x4 according to the compatibility tables. I thought 4wd and 4x4 was the same.

Those compatibility tables on eBay are a real pain. I usually end up sending a message to the seller.Solas wrote: Looking for an outer cv joint on ebay! But confused as to what my jimny is! Can't help on the CV joint, but, in the case of the Jimny, 4x4 = 4WD
4WD simply means four-wheel drive. It doesn't specify how many wheels in total the car has, although four is the norm, and usually assumed
4x4 means a vehicle having 4 wheels with 4 wheels driven. As opposed to a normal 2-wheel-drive car which is 4x2 or a 6-wheel vehicle with all wheels driven which is 6x6. Or a Reliant Robin which is 3x2!!
Then we throw in AWD for All-Wheel-Drive just for good measure :)Again, this could be 6x6 or 4x4.

While in theory you are absolutely right this might not be the case when it comes to Jimnys.
I am not 100% sure on that, but my local parts dealer (3rd party) in his compatibility chart states:
JIMNY (FJ) 1.3 16V 4WD 02.2001 -> 82 PS 60 KW 1328 ccm
JIMNY (FJ) 1.3 16V 4WD 09.1998 -> 80 PS 59 KW 1298 ccm
JIMNY (FJ) 1.3 16V 4x4 08.2005 -> 86 PS 63 KW 1328 ccm
So I am assuming that the difference is in the way the vehicle was marketed and/or the engine that was fitted.
But I wouldn't trust this too much, as I have a Spain-built JB33 with an M13A engine (and everywhere you read a JB33 = G13 engine. And I doubt that anyone was doing a swap in it...)
