hello all, apols if this is in the wrong posting area , just tell me where to go in future, on a very steep forum learning curve so please bear with.
i recently fitted some 205 70 r 15 AT tyres to my little bog hopper and it turned out they were about 50mm diameter larger , so i changed
the rear tyres to match, my question is. if i get a puncture and change it for the tailgate spare which is a standard road tyre 205 70 r 15
(smaller diameter) driving with two diff size wheels will knacker the rear diff right? so i now need a spare which is the AT size?
hope this does sound like a stupid to obvious question ,cheers Liam.

I always thought when I had an odd size spare I'd put it on the front.....problem with using online tyre rolling diameter charts is the remoulds are usually "fikker" as a kid said to me the other day....makes it tricky to guess.
Just jack one side of the car and put the oddball on the front to get you home......or carry a puncture repair kit and a pump?

It won't knacker the diff any more than driving around a corner does. Maybe if you left it on for 50,000 miles it would cause accelerated wear, but nothing exciting will happen.
A bigger concern would be fitting it on the front if you have ABS. The different speed of rotation will confuse things.
And avoid using 4wd unless the going is really slippery. The smaller tyre will lead to more transmission windup than usual.

if you check out a car with a *space saver* spare wheel they are always a smaller diameter than the roadwheels fitted, so as Busta says it won,t knacker the diff unless you drive silly mileage on it

Its fine to use as a spare as they all say. Any diff will allow a bit of 'diff'erence between wheels. Thats what they are for (unless locked).
have a look at this for size comparisons:
