tyres (again?) was created by Antelope
I'm sure this is a well worn (no pun intended) subject on here, but I can't find recommendations specific enough.

I have 4x Maxxis BRAVO SERIES AT-771 on my Jim. They're fine, but they're old and starting to perish. As I'm about to drive from Crete to the UK and back, I want good tyres and am going to replace them. I can do so with the same, or Toyos (I think Open Countrys), or Yokohamas (I think geolanders), all at about the same price. That's if I chnage them here. If I wait until i get to the uk, which I'm willing to do, there would be more choice.

I need a good all rounder, for driving at about 70 on tarmac, but also for use on dirt roads, and in snow. Any suggestions? With an eye on the EU ratings for wet grip and fuel economy...

[edit - does anyone know if the EU Wet grip rating applies to cornering and general handling as well as stopping distance in the wet? Mind you, not that it's all that relevant in a Jim.]

thanks

Toyo OPEN COUNTRY A/T before they were banned (unable to sell them, not to use them) due to excessive EU noise ratings in the UK were the slightly cheaper option to general grabbers - people who had them always had goods thing things to say about them.

maybe once we're out of the EU they'll come back

Someone told me that the ambient temperatures here in Crete mean that tyre selection is different from the UK. It's generally in the upper 30s in august and can go into the forties. Is this rubbish or not?

And the Maxxis that I have on at the o (US tyres, bit obscure in UK but some specialists sell them) seem to be quite hard, but I can't compare with yokos and toys as I don't happen to have any lying about! Is it the case that A/T tyres tend to be harder than general on road tyres?

probably true about ambient temps dictating regional tyre selection and that a UK summer tyre may wear a lot quicker in Crete.

would also guess that you don't get UK winter and all season tyres over there as they wouldn't last long at all over there.

but wouldn't have thought it applied to ATs and if it did, then sure they call the variants different names to distinguish them.

but all this is just my opinion, I'm not an expert - you may have to do a bit research on tinterweb

Yes, tinterweb can sometimes raise more questions than it answers. Also I tend to get a bit Sherlock about it all an carried away with details. It is A/T tyres that are on offer here (you can get winter tyres as it gets very snowy up in the mountains). None of them have great EU rating scores, especially on fuel economy and wet braking. I'm sort of coming down on the side of yokohamas (it's them, Toyos or Maxxis), as at there is a single differentiator for them, which is their wet braking class is two higher then the others at C. Mind you, the Maxxis have white lettering :-) And I do know them as they're on there now.

My wife runs Maxxis 771's on her Jimny, and swears by them.

They're not as aggressive-looking as Grabbers, but are certainly quieter, and stick like the brown stuff to a blanket
