Not a fan of the oiled cotton filters like the k&n for the simple reason that they're messy. Even from new out of the bag they tend to eventually leave an oily residue every where and seem to be particularly good at clogging the sensor on MAF sensors as these are often located near the air box. Seen an awful lot of them do this. They might be good in their ability to flow more air as claimed but they're not really that good at filtering the really fine particles of rubbish in the air like a paper filter does.

If in doubt ...... Flat out ??

That's what I found on my old Honda, before I fitted the K&N the airbox was always clean on the engine side of the filter, afterwards it was always dusty. I wouldn't use one on a road car and definitely not on one that was used off-road without a pre-cleaner.
It did breathe better but it needed cleaning quite frequently to maintain flow - the kit for that isn't cheap.

Some Suzukis and a bunch of motorcycles.

Your painting a picture I have to say I don't recognise from years of running them on various fast road cars including subarus and the odd Ford. Never had dust inside the air box and was fortunate enough to be able to use one filter on 3 different scoobies that took the milage well over 100k. Maybe like everything else the old ones were better and modern ones are inferior and trade on the name?

I used to race FG Marders, ( Big 2wd RC petrol cars ) and it was well known that if an engine had been fitted with a K&N air filter, that engine would more than likely be f**ked. Most used the standard filter, a large oiled sponge filter with a nylon dust sock covering it

Do the kn filters do much to change the noise output? As in a better sound?
