I had this recently, was worse when starting under load, I.e. with air con, fan and rear Demister on - changed the fan/power steering belt and it helped a little bit, but then changed the battery and it cured it.

May also be your alternator belt, belt tensioner or other.

Often trial and error as hard to pin it down

Good luck

As per halford my brother had the same issue. Changed the belts but it was still squealing. Tested the battery which showed 50% efficient and it was cured!

As the others have said if you are getting a loud squeal or screeching from cold it's usually worn belts or alternator belt.
Tightening the tensions doesn't always help as the belt is usually worn enough for the "V" not to grip the pulley.
If the battery is getting old it doesn't hold the charge well and the alternator is always under load trying to charge it up.

You have to establish if it is belt squeal and which one as there are a few in there.
I would suggest turning everything electrical off eg heater/lights etc. and see if that reduces the noise.

As already said it's a matter of elimination.
I'm not sure what causes it to disappear when you stop and disengage gears?
This would suggest a mechanical fault rather than belts.
Could it be your clutch release bearing??
Does your clutch cable need adjusting??
Usually with belts you get a loud squeal when moving off and the car is still cold. It usually disappears if you ease the throttle.

Check your belts for tension/wear and replace if in any doubt.
If the noise still persists you'll just have to work through the possibilities.
As long as it is just belts it's not a big problem but if it's a mechanical problem it sometimes helps if you can get someone outside the car to listen to try and pinpoint the area?

I started off high and worked my way down ever since :-)
