So you think Suzuki have tried to stop us burning out the starter motor if we have simply run out of fuel?

Crickey! Do you think they'd think of that?

did you remember to unlock the car door with the remote rather than the key if you locked it with the remote ? i've been caught out by this before as it is tied to the engine immobiliser. first time it happened i tried jump starting the car only to remember the remote & it started.

Hi all,
Unfortunately I've been flat out with a back strain, fitting a heavy cast iron stove, so I've not been able to try out the suggestions from Mickt and Kickynut as yet. I'll certainly try them out.

There is one thought,,, 8 months ago I dropped the remote key (the one with the immobiliser and central locking) down a stairwell it shattered on the tiled floor below, into two halves, and now doesn't work in the car ignition. But the plain spare key opens the doors and has started the car for 8 months. I did wonder if some how the immobiliser has kicked in. But the ignition lights do come on and there's clicking sounds heard as I turn the key, I presume thats the magnetic switch kicking in on the starter.

Do you think the immobiliser has kicked in and is stopping the car starting, based on the info I've given. Hopefully in a day or two my back will allow me to get under the car and give the starter a whack or two. By-the-way it bumps starts very easily almost at walking pace.

If it starts with a push it is definitely a starter motor problem rather than an immobiliser one. The immobiliser cuts out the spark so the engine would turn over but won't fire. Take the starter off and get an electrical motor specialist to take a look at it.

Thanks Busta,

In this case, I'll try the whack to the starter first see if that works, and in any case even if it's fine after that, I plan to remove the starter completely and give it a service/clean and refit it. Hopefully that will do the trick if not I'll replace the starter completely.

Thanks to all for the advice.

BGBrit.

Good luck removing it, it's not an easy job! I found jacking up the chassis and letting the axle hang down gave the best access to the 2x 14mm bolts that are on the back of the bellhousing.
