Howdy folks,
I'm taking a trip to Iceland this February, and will be renting some kind of 4x4 to drive the ring rode. It's going to be snowy, icy, and desolate.
The top two rentals I want are either a Jimny or a Land Crusher: sadcars.com/en/fleet
I'm leaning toward the Jimny because it's got a manual, is lighter/smaller, less expensive, etc. Little trucks are definitely capable (I drive a Mazda B2300 in a land of F350s). I know that a truck doesn't need a 7L diesel to get through the snow.
My only hesitation is that I'm tall(1.9m) and fat(140kg), and my wife is tall(1.85m) & pregnant(weight undisclosed-I'm not stupid).
1) Will I honestly fit in the truck with winter gear on (Heavy boots, jacket, pants, etc.)?
2) Will my pregnant wife dump me in the ocean for renting too small a car?
3) In case of #2, does the Jimny float well?

Hi
For your own safety (not from the weather ) and comfort I'd go with the landcruiser

I would agree with Daniel. I'm the same height as you and weigh about 110 kilos and must say I find the Jimny compact to say the least. Great for off roading and very capable but as regards living with one for a full week or two. I don't think so

Get the Land Cruiser. Iceland may be full of gravelroads, but they are mostly in very good condition. No problem driving them in a regular family car.
Are you staying on hotels every night or planning on camping?

I am 1.82m tall and about 120kg and I find the jimny fits me perfectly but I do rub shoulders with all but the littlest adults. On long trips the jimny has actually been one of the most comfortable cars I have and unlike most other cars I can usually get out and walk around normally even after a full days driving. This being said I do have relatively short legs and a long spine and have to have the seat all the way back and quite upright or it sets off my sciatica so i suspect that if you are a more normally proportioned human being it could be a bit tight. Best advice would be to get a test drive from a dealership then you will know for certain.

Not a chance.
I drove mine with my coat on today and I was squashed by the door, and I'm more middle sized than large.
Get the Landcruiser, as long as it isn't the poverty spec. model, it should be the 6-speed auto, just the job for enjoying the drive without having to mess with the controls all the time.
If it suddenly breaks, go back to the last thing that you did before it broke and start looking there
