I think it can be a serious problem. I caused axle wind up a few times in my SJ and nearly broke it. I recognised it and knew I had overdone it but newcomers may very likely not identify the locking up effect. This is why I always suggest permanent four wheel drive vehicles like the Rav4 for those who just want 4WD for inclement weather. When mudplugging, because it is almost always slippery, leaving the vehicle in 4WD is OK but in snowy weather when often the roads are actually dry it becomes a nuisance trying to decide whether or not to engage the extra wheels or when to disengage. Also IMHO engaging 4WD on the fly as we go from dry to slippery is a pain.

What part nearly broke helijohn?

I do agree with your advice on the Rav4. A Jimny is a silly choice if not being used off-road, but we have to respect peoples buying decisions!
