Hi all, I do some work with a group of Overland travellers -mainly on motorbikes - and I've just had a fantastic few days away with them laning near Alston in Cumbria - masses of lanes around that area including one steep one up the side of the bunkhouse!
The owner Danny is an overland traveller, you can stay in his brand new bunkhouse, or on the camping field, or even take your caravan or motorhome. Groups can have a campfire at night and Danny can organise meals for larger groups if needed. Danny's used to trail bikes being around so a few noisy 4x4's aren't going to bother him. Danny can provide GPX files of all the lanes in the area when you get there ( he won't email them out though, available to guests only) and has a large map on the wall in the lounge with them all marked.
If you fancy a trip up there contact details are on Danny's website, mention my name if you do go.

Half of the guys up there this weekend were from London! I towed my Jimny up there from Crewe.

GPX files are the location of green lanes on a map, to read them you need mapping software such as Memory Map, there are many others available , but we use Memory Map with their digital 1:50,000 Ordnance Survey Landranger maps. We use IPads on the dash in the cars and draw a route including all the lanes we want to drive and the route between them so you just follow a red line throughout the day. Danny has a full size map up there , you can buy paper maps in the nearest town and mark all the lanes onto that yourself if you don't have GPS mapping.

Awesome place
