This time next year i plan to....

This time next year i plan to of done and engine swap in princess. Im giving myself a year as im in no rush and it will give me plenty of time to save and do the work. I do have a couple of questions though----
What engine shall i go for? Iv seen from a few guys that the 1.6 liana engine just drop in, no worried.
What are the pros and cons of this engine or ones similar?
Iv all so seen and read about either/or both 1.7 and 1.9 turbo diseles going in from izuzus i think, and carlton or manta gear boxes and othet bits. Again, pros and cons of this engine choice and can anyone tell me exactly what id need if i was to go down this much harder route?

Now enough about my pipe dreams, what are your plans for your jim over the next year? Have you reached its full potential, maybe theres something youve always wanted to change or buy but just havnt had thr balls to yet or maybe you know eactly what you want? Tell us.

If you can help me with my querie, brilliant. If you cant then tell us about yourr future plans, swap ideas and get new ones.

Depends what year jimny you have as to what engine you need

theres a kit avalible to fit the izuzu 1.7rd out of cavaliers astras corsa's ect

Heard of a couple people fitting the pug 1.5 and 1.9 d but heard people say its too heavy.not sure on the manta box like

i fitted an m16a to my jimny july 13,been in the trade it was an easy swap for me for anyone handy with spanners could be done in a weekend.my swap was very cost effective as i do everything as cheaply as poss on mine,i bought a full car for the engine.still say out of everything ive done to the jimny its the best upgrade.drove a 1.3 jimny this week a couple of times with lift mud tyres snorkel and you forget how flat they are.well worth doing imo

A petrol engine swap keeping with Suzuki engines is always going to be easiest. The wiring is simple, the ECU does not need changing, the gearbox and gearing all stay as they are, everything is well documented on this forum and they should cost less than £500 excl. labour.

Firstly you need to know what engine you have. If its the G13B (78hp, black plastic cambelt cover) you can swap to a Baleno or Vitara 1.6 with 94hp
If its the M13A (80hp, aluminium timing chain cover) then the Liana 1.6 will fit, which is 101hp.

There's also a myriad of non-suzuki petrol engines that will fit but will need custom mounts, bellhousings etc. A Rover 1.8vvc k-series or Ford 2.0 duratec would both give you 150hp with next to no weight penalty, but require as much work to fit as a diesel and the extra expense of standalone ECUs.

The easiest diesel options are the 82hp Isuzu (Vauxhall) 1.7dt with a DaveCC fitting kit and the standard Jimny gearbox or the 90hp Peugeot XUD 1.9dt and an LDV Pilot gearbox. Both of these engines can be easily tuned to around 100hp. Avoid non-turbo diesel engines at all costs.

If you go the diesel route, there is a lot more to think about! You need to weigh up the advantage of a diesel engine (higher torque at low revs) against the downsides- extra expense of engine and fitting kit/custom mounts, extra weight, much more complicated to fit and in some cases less power.

Consider that for the cost of a diesel conversion you could probably fit a 1.6 petrol and a rocklobster, giving you all the low speed grunt for big tyres and still keeping it sensible on the road.

I hope that's food for thought. I bought a £350 Liana for the engine swap and have ended up using it as my everyday car instead! Maybe doing the swap should be my 1 year goal too...

Thanks everome for youre replies, iv got a 51 plate softop which i believe to be the less powrfull engine. Forgive me but my mechanial skills and knowledge are pretty poor. Which......kind of means simply based on that i should go for the 1.6 swap. I was swaying towards a diesel simply or the torque, but i dont know if this sole good point cancels out all the not so good points. A 1.9 turbo diesel jim would be a treat, but for the cost and ease of fitting a 1.6.....no brainer maybe.
