There's a good drive from St John's in the Vale ( just south of Threlkeld ) across to Matterdale End. Decent track all the way the boggy section will be frozen solid at the moment . Take camera as cracking view of Blencathra from the coach road.
After that drive up Mungrisdale and Mosedale towards Hesket Newmarket, there's a ford on the way with a steep climb out towards a cattle grid at Calebreak you will pass my old house on the road to Hesket where the Old Crown Inn serves real ale brewed in the back yard the pub and brewery are cooperatives owned by the villagers.
Drive up to Fell side head towards Uldale take road for Orthwaite which is in Keswick direction. If you are using a map you can divert to see Dash Falls and check if the gate up to Skiddaw House is open -rough track with big drops very steep but probably iced up at the moment which will keep the crazy mountain bikers away
hope this helps
Mike
