Rust buckets. was created by BGBrit
Hello all,,, back in my younger days most cars were prone to rust (UK) very quickly, many a time I've checked for soundness only for the screwdriver to disappear through to the inside of the car or through a chassis indicating an mot failure or lots of welding work to be undertaken...

I've just recently bought a 2009 Suzuki Jinmy and although my choice was for practical purposes (I live in Bulgaria) I have found by joining this site the days of rust buckets are back! On closer inspection of my Jimny I have seen the signs of rust albeit in small areas, e.g. behind the headlights but I have yet to inspect the underside fully. Which comes to one of the points of my post. Could anybody on this site, point me in the direction of the main rust pockets and how they solved the problems of rust prevention?

I have a few tins of Hammerite rustproof primmer paint, some black satin 3in1 Hammerite paint and a few tins of wax/oil Hammerite underseal. I was thinking of wire-brushing the loose rusty flakes and priming and top-coating the rusty areas, followed by as much as possible a full underseal of wax/oil. Perhaps I should forgo the above and spray the complete underside with old engine oil twice a year instead. My second question, What do you all think about these methods of rust protection?

Oh, those were the days, Tony, when nobody gave a rat's what went on the floor or down the drains...just drop it out of the sump and spread it all over the underneath while your face is still black ;)
Trouble always was, though, how the hell did you know when you'd got a genuine oil leak??

Hadn't thought about oil leaks Chris,,, Different age with environment issues too, H&S also, I remember welding a chain that was looped around my waist to the side of a ship to get access to do a job (80 ft drop)
Men were men back then and a little crazy too.

So I guess the right thing is wire brush and paint, Cheers Chris.

Halford thank for this :)

I wonder if Flag is the same chemical make up as ''Hammerite grey primer'' even though it's water based. On the Hammerite tin it says No. 1 rust beater 3in1 rust protector, Kills rust, primes & undercoat in one... I also wonder will hammerrite topcoat be compatible too, solvent based ontop of water base. Can anybody enlighten me on this?

First time I've heard of Flag,,,, used Hammerite many times before but on gates and stuff never on cars, I've also heard the formula in Hammerite has changed due to EU rules I believe because of VOC's, therefore maybe not so good as in the past.

Just visited the Flag web-site it says compatible with solvent based top-coat.
