Dilemma- do the 1.6 conversion or wait until my current engine dies?

I own a 2005 pre VVT Jimny which has 112k on the clock. The engine runs spot on with no complaints other than the usual poor mpg and struggling up hills!
Reading supergaz's posts has inspired me to do the 1.6 conversion. I can get a bare liana engine for £250 with 50k on the clock- fair bit less miles than my own car. A local garage has quoted £300 labour to do the swap and fit a new clutch at the same time. I'm guessing new belts, oil and other small parts I'll need will be about £100.
Insurance will rise £50 with the bigger engine.
I just need to work out whether it's worth the cost to change? It'll be £600 overall and I guess I may get a little back for my jimny engine (although not much with the mileage!)
Or should I adopt the "if it ain't broke don't fix it" attitude?

Cant comment on whether to do it or not but I've got to ask are the garage aware its not a straight swap? £300 labour is kind of cheap for a garage to do a straight swap let alone a conversion and new clutch.

That's pretty much six hours labour.... Would have thought it would be enough? If the engine was out i got the impression the clutch was an easy job.

Does your mechanic understand the job involved as it is not a straight swap you need to swap everything over, Don't tell the insurance or register it or your tax will shoot up
engine is identical.
Have you factored in other parts to do the conversion? Inlet and outlet gaskets, Oil filter mount, maybe a new sump as they rot, maybe you want a new oil pick up pipe as this needs to be swapped. I sold my old engine as it was good, so added the cost of a new sump pan and oil pick up pipe. Remember you will need oil, filter and antifreeze ect.

I had worked it out as 6 hours which is why I questioned it, that's not really a lot of time for an engine swap. As supergaz has mentioned I would double check you have accounted for everything, its much better to be expecting it to cost more then it does then to be stuck with a much larger bill at the end. Have you thought about diy'ing it? These cars are nice and easy to work on. I do have to disagree with supergaz on the insurance side, the engines have the code and number stamped on them which is one of the first things an insurance assessor would look at in the event of the accident - could end up with insurance refusing to cover it.

Cheers gents. Yes I did explain to him (by phone btw) that it all needed to be swapped over so hopefully he appreciates what's involved. With my job I can't risk not coming clean to the insurance company sadly!
I figured £100 or so for extras.... That a little low? Not sure what sort of price a sump and oil pick up pipe would be.
I live in a terraced house with no driveway etc and am a mechanically novice so sadly not a job I could attempt myself.
Tricky one, don't want to end up spending £700 and have an engine that runs badly!
