'Clunk' while reversing!? was created by JAGM
Hi,
Just wondered if anyone had come across this problem before. I have owned my 2005 VVT (completely unmodified) for almost a year. It has 27,000 miles on the clock and had one elderly lady owner. It is in immaculate condition and has been well-maintained. When reversing, with some steeering-lock on, there is a gentle 'clunk' coming from the nearside / front area. It almost sounds like the noise that the vacuum hubs make when they are engaging (the 4WD is working perfectly, by the way). It has been like this since I bought it and it does not bother me too much, but I just wanted to know if it could be something that would need to be remedied in case it causes a bigger problem later on. The Kingpins and Bearings have recently been renewed and are 100%. Any ideas????
Regards,
JAGM.

think I had the same issue, it was groan/clunk type sound,
mine went away after getting front wheel laser tracked at ATS for £30
not sure but I think my sound had been from the track rod ends as when I park up, I have the the wheels on full right hand lock then straighten up. Hence placing strain on the joints, and placing even more strain on the joints when the tracking was out.
just my theory .... could be wrong
did you have problems specifically with the Kingpins and Bearings and can you feel the difference now

Hi Halford,
Thanks for your reply. I will check out your theory and report back when I get a chance. I noticed oil dripping onto the driveway at the inside of the front passenger wheel, and my friend (a mechanic in a local BMW dealership and an ex-SJ owner himself) confirmed that I needed to sort the bearings. On his advice, I ended up doing both sides, and changed the Kingpins as well. It was my local Suzuki dealer who did the work, and it was an excellent job (Robert Smyth at Donnelly Suzuki, Campsie, Northern Ireland). I do notice a very slight and welcome inprovement - the steering wheel was absolutely straight when driving in a straight line when I bought the Jimny, and for some months before the oil leak, I noticed that when driving in a straight line, the steering wheel was just slightly off-centre. It is now absolutely centered again when driving on a straight road. It has also removed the slight 'play' that was present when the front wheels were shaken by hand - my friend went to see the Jimny with me before I bought it, and he told me then that there was some 'play' in the wheels which would eventually result in Kingpin work (so I knew that sooner or later it would have to be done). The front end definitely feels 'tighter' as a result. If it had not leaked oil, I would probably have driven it on for a while before getting the bearings done.
