Hi,
Just fitted Manual Hubs, on my 2008 Jimny. I have blocked off the air tubes at each hub, 4x4 light works a treat and transfer box selects 4x4 as it should. What I want to know is, can I keep the hubs locked in 4x4 on road (with 4x4 dash switch not selected), and use the electronic 4x4 dash. selector switch when I go off road. or will this damage something. Just so I don't need to stop and get out and lock hubs, when I know I will be going off road. Cheers.

don't see why not... the original SJs and Vitaras where fixed hubs and used the transfer box to disconnect.. same with old series Landrovers and many other Jap part time 4wd motors..
the original reason for fitting free-wheel hubs was to save fuel and wear and tear on the front drivetrain.
mine is manual and its a bit more agricultural on the occasions I have the hubs locked up but in 2wd.

I leave my front manual hubs engaged all the time so when I select four wheel drive I don't have to faff about engaging the hubs.
I did the same on my SJ too as has been suggested.
If I were going to scream down the motorway at 70mph for a few hours I would likely consider setting the hubs to freewheel first.

My mate (has a 1994 hilux) told me a while ago that its fine to leave them in on short trips and safer to unlock them on long trips

I have fixed hubs that are therefore permanently locked. SJs & Vitaras used to only have manual hubs as an option. It was an option a lot of people had but standard fit were fixed hubs.
So yes, you can leave them locked when not in 4wd.
People will tell you it uses more fuel but I say poppy cock! You'd barely notice it if you were to notice it.
It will wear on the oil seal but if you change that regularly with your kingpin bearings it won't be SJ issue.
